Representações no jornal Página 20: um estudo sobre mulheres negras na coluna Cultura 20

Abstract

This research is part of the area of concentration: Language and Culture, and the Research Line: Cultures, Narratives, and Identities, of the Postgraduate Program in Languages: Language and Identity, from the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), with the general objective of studying the representations of black women in texts in the Cultura 20 section, signed by journalist Naylor George and published in the newspaper Página 20, from July 1996 to October 1999. This material is divided into three chapters, the first of which deals with the concepts of culture, representation, identity, and difference, which also presents a brief discussion about journalism as an area of knowledge and discusses the premise of objectivity in this field of study. Among the authors used for the construction of the text, there are Hall (2016), Woodward (2014), Laraia (1986), Foucault (1996), Eagleton (2011), Bhabha (1998), and Llosa (2013). The second chapter presents a brief history of how white women and black women were inserted in their respective societies from the 19th century onwards when the press appeared in Brazil. For this phase of the work, the following references are used: Davis (2016), Buitoni (2009), Beauvoir (1970), Perrot (2018), Pinsky (2018), Nepomuceno (2018), Miranda (2018), and Giuliani (2018). The third chapter of the thesis presents reflections on the texts collected from Página 20. There were identified a total of 693, published between July 1996 and October 1999. Out of those, 06 texts were published in 06 different editions, bringing black women as protagonists of the published articles in the edition. Thus, the work used bibliographic research and document analysis as a methodology to present reflections on the 06 texts collected in Cultura 20. Among the results, it was found the presence of speeches based on racialized and segregating representations, which will result in the description of stereotyped identities. Also, the analyzed texts will delimit which spaces black women occupied at that time, as well as highlight the exposure of their bodies in an objectified way from sexualized narratives. Furthermore, the analysis of the documents carried out in the 06 texts of the Cultura 20 section also identifies the silencing of black women in the process of local cultural construction.
